A thought from George Ford
‘Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.’ (1John 4:7-11)
Reflection
This is one of the most direct passages about love in the bible because it illustrates bold a self-giving love that always seeks the best interests of others. A love that is God and comes directly from Him. God’s unconditional love for us creates an abundance of love in us which should overflow towards others for their benefit. Jesus on the night before He died said to His disciples, “A new commandment I give unto you that love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12)
Prayer
Heavenly Father creator and giver of all good gifts we thank and praise you for your great love of us, and of all you created. Continue to create in us, we pray, such and abundance of self-giving love that it overflows in our love towards others, and all your creation, to the continual praise you who first loved us. Amen.
Worship
A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you love one another as I have loved you. By this shall everyone know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another. By this shall everyone know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another. (Author unknown)
